What to put on a freelance invoice
- A unique, sequential invoice number. Never reuse one.
- The issue date and a due date, or payment terms like "14 days".
- Your name or business, address and, if you're registered, your tax or VAT number.
- The client's legal name and address, and their VAT number for business clients in the EU.
- What you did, line by line, with quantities and prices, so nobody has to ask what a total is for.
- Tax shown separately, with the rate, or a note explaining why none is charged.
- How to pay you: bank details, payment link, and the invoice number as the payment reference.

Questions
Is this invoice generator really free?
Yes. There is no account, no trial and no watermark beyond a small "Made with OIO" line at the foot of the page. You can make as many invoices as you like.
Do you store the invoices I make?
No. The form and the PDF are built in your browser. Your browser keeps a copy of the draft in its own local storage so a reload doesn't lose your work, and "Start over" clears it. Nothing is sent to our servers.
What does an invoice need to be valid?
Rules differ by country, but most tax authorities expect a unique sequential number, the issue date, your name and address, the client's name and address, a description of the work, the amounts, the tax rate and tax amount if you charge tax, and your tax or VAT number if you're registered. If you work with business clients abroad, check whether a reverse-charge note applies.
Which currencies can I use?
Any active ISO currency, the same list OIO uses for its own invoices. Pick it in the Currency field and the symbol and decimal places follow, for example no decimals for yen. For Bitcoin, Ether, Solana, USDC or USDT, use the crypto invoice generator.
How should I number my invoices?
Use one unbroken sequence and never reuse a number, for example INV-001, INV-002 or 2026-014. If you cancel an invoice, keep the number and issue a credit note rather than deleting it.
Keep the next one in OIO
Numbered automatically, tied to the client and the project, outstanding until you mark it paid. Overdue invoices get their own list and a reminder written for you. Free plan, no card.
