Invoice template for content writers
Content writing is often billed per article, with the length set in the brief. The invoice should list each piece by title and word count, because the client's editor is checking them off against a content calendar, and a line that just says "4 blog posts" sends them back to their spreadsheet to find out which four.
The extras are where the margin goes. Keyword research the client did not provide, sourcing and captioning images, formatting and publishing the article in their CMS, adding internal links, rewriting a piece because the brief changed after it was written. None of that is writing, and all of it should be billable.

What content writers forget to bill
- Keyword and topic research when the client did not supply a brief.
- Image sourcing, alt text and stock licences bought for the article.
- Formatting, uploading and publishing in the client's CMS.
- Rewrites caused by a changed brief, as opposed to edits on the original brief.
- Expert interviews or original research that go beyond desk research.
- A ghostwriting premium if the piece runs under someone else's name.
Questions content writers ask
How do content writers charge?
Per article, per word or as a monthly retainer for a set number of pieces. Per article with a target length is the most common, because it gives both sides a fixed price. Retainers suit regular publishing schedules.
Should I charge extra for uploading articles to the CMS?
If you do it, yes. Formatting, adding images, internal links and metadata takes real time per piece. Either price it as a per-article add-on or include it in a slightly higher article rate, and say which.
Can I charge more for ghostwriting?
Many writers do, because the piece runs under someone else's name and cannot go in a bylined portfolio. If you charge a ghostwriting premium, show it as a line or note so the client understands what it covers.
