Invoice template for music producers

A music production invoice often covers several jobs that different people would normally bill for: writing or producing the track, recording, mixing, mastering, and paying session musicians. When it is one line marked "Track production", an artist cannot tell what they paid for, and a label later cannot tell what is still owed. Split it into the stages and the players.

The fee is also only part of the deal. Producers commonly get points or a share of royalties, plus a credit. Those are agreed in a contract or split sheet, not on the invoice, but it helps to refer to them on the invoice so nobody reads the fee as a buyout of everything.

What music producers forget to bill

Questions music producers ask

How do music producers charge per track?

Usually a flat fee per track for production, with mixing and mastering priced separately because they can be done by others. Some producers charge a lower fee in exchange for a larger royalty share. Put the fee on the invoice and the split in the agreement.

Should I bill session musicians on my invoice?

If you booked and paid them, yes, as their own lines with their names. If the artist hires them directly, keep them off your invoice and make sure the musicians' own terms cover the recording rights.

When do I deliver the stems?

After the invoice is paid. Stems let anyone remix or re-release the track, so they are worth more than a bounce. If the client wants them, list them as a separate deliverable.
