A Monday.com alternative for small studios
Monday.com is a platform of boards you shape into whatever your team needs, with separate products for sales, service and software teams. OIO is project management for small creative studios: projects, tickets, files, freelancers and the client in one place, with the quote and the invoice on the same project. If you run a studio of two to eight people, this is the comparison.
What Monday is good at
Monday.com is the easiest of the big work tools to read. A colour-coded board shows where everything stands at a glance, and a team without a technical person can build automations on its own. Timeline and Gantt views, guest access and time tracking are there on the higher plans, and viewers are free from the first paid plan. Its CRM product also makes quotes and invoices, so a team that wants both can stay with one vendor.
Where it gets heavy for a small studio
- The work management plans do not invoice. Quotes and invoices are part of monday CRM, a separate product with its own plans and a monthly limit on documents below its top tier.
- Paid plans start at three seats and are sold in seat steps, so one more person can move the whole account to the next step.
- The free plan is for up to two seats and three boards, which a studio outgrows with its first few clients.
- Timeline and Gantt views, guest access and automations start at the Standard plan, and time tracking at Pro, per its pricing page.
What OIO does instead
I have freelanced as a designer since 2014 and now run a remote team. For years a project lived in a task tool, a chat, a shared folder and an invoicing app, and none of them knew about the others. OIO puts them on one page.
OIO is project management for small studios. Each client job gets one project page with its tickets on a kanban or a timeline, the deadline, files, a whiteboard and team chat, and on paid plans recorded calls with transcripts. The budget, the hours and what has been paid sit on the same page.
A freelancer gets a link to a ticket. In a browser they read the brief and the feedback, upload the work and mark it done, with no account and no seat. The client gets a status link that shows where the project stands.
The quote and the invoice come from the same project, in any currency. Studio is $69 a month for five seats, and people who only view use no seat. The free plan covers 3 projects, no card.
Moving over does not have to happen in one go. OIO imports projects, clients and tickets from a CSV file, or you can start the next job in OIO and leave the finished ones where they are.

When Monday is the better fit
- If you want rules that assign, notify and move work on their own, Monday is the better fit. OIO has no automations.
- If you bill from tracked time, Monday is the better fit on its Pro plan. OIO keeps hours on each ticket but has no timer.
- If you want sales, service desk and projects from one vendor, Monday is the better fit, with its CRM and service products next to the boards.
- If your team likes building its own workflows from scratch, Monday is the better fit. Its boards bend further than OIO's projects.

Monday's column was checked against monday.com/pricing on 15 October 2026. The middle mark means it starts on a higher plan or, for quotes and invoices, in monday CRM, a separate product. Prices are left out on purpose because they change. Sources: Monday.com pricing.
Questions
Is OIO a good Monday.com alternative for a small studio?
For a studio of two to eight people doing client projects with freelancers, yes. Projects, tickets, files, the client and the invoice are in one place, and the free plan covers 3 projects. If you depend on automations, a time tracker or building your own workflows, Monday does more there.
Does Monday.com do invoicing?
Not in its work management plans. monday CRM, a separate product, makes quotes and invoices, with a monthly limit below its top plan. In OIO the quote and the invoice come from the project itself, in any currency.
Can freelancers work in OIO without a seat?
Yes. You send them a ticket link. They read the brief and the feedback, upload the work and mark it done in a browser, with no account. If they want to keep a history of their work, they can create a free account later.
Can I move my boards from Monday.com?
OIO imports projects, clients and tickets from a CSV file, and matches each column to a field you can change before the import. Updates, files and automations do not come across.
