Invoice template for copywriters
Copywriting is short output with long input. A homepage might be 600 words, but behind it are the brief, the competitor review, two interviews with the founder, three headline directions and a round of edits with a legal team. Billing per word for that undersells the job; billing per project with a clear list of what was delivered keeps the price tied to the value.
What slips through is the extra work around the copy. A third round of edits after the client changed the offer. A call with a new stakeholder who has opinions. A project cancelled halfway after you had written the drafts. Each needs a line, and the kill fee in particular should be invoiced the day the project is pulled.

What copywriters forget to bill
- Research and stakeholder interviews, if they went beyond what the quote included.
- Edit rounds beyond the included number, billed per round.
- A kill fee when a project is cancelled after work has started.
- Extra headline or concept directions requested after the first set was approved.
- Usage extensions, for example print or paid media use of copy licensed for the website.
Questions copywriters ask
Do copywriters charge per word or per project?
Most experienced copywriters charge per project or per deliverable, because the value of a headline or a sales page has little to do with its length. Per-word rates show up more in content writing. If you do quote per word, set a minimum.
How do I invoice a kill fee?
As its own line, referencing the cancelled project and the clause in your terms. The kill fee should be agreed in the quote, usually as a share of the fee that rises with how far the work had progressed.
Should research time be on a copywriting invoice?
If the quote included it, it is part of the project fee. If the client added interviews, new stakeholders or a second product, bill the extra time as its own line so the next quote can account for it.
