A shoot day is rarely just a day. There is prep, load-in, the shoot, load-out and then offloading and backing up the cards. Then there are the costs around it: a sound recordist, a second camera, lens and light hire, parking and mileage. If all of that sits inside one day rate, the client cannot see why a second shoot day costs what it does.
Videographers also lose money on overtime. The shoot was booked for ten hours and ran to thirteen because the talent arrived late. If the quote set a day length and an overtime rate, the invoice just applies it.

What videographers forget to bill
- Crew as separate lines: second shooter, sound recordist, gaffer.
- Kit hire beyond your own package: lenses, lights, gimbal, drone.
- Travel time and expenses: mileage, parking, accommodation.
- Overtime past the agreed day length.
- Weather or reschedule days if the client moved the shoot late.
- Raw footage delivery, if the client wants all the rushes.
Questions videographers ask
Should videographers charge a half day or full day rate?
Offer both, but price the half day at more than half of the full day. Setup, travel and kit prep take the same time either way, and a half day booking usually stops you selling the other half.
How do I bill travel as a videographer?
Mileage or fares at cost, plus travel time at a reduced or full rate depending on what you quoted. Long travel often means a travel day, which should be its own line.
Do clients pay overtime on a video shoot?
If the quote says so. State the day length, for example 10 hours including breaks, and an overtime rate per hour. Then overtime is a line on the invoice, not an argument.
