A ShotGrid alternative for small studios
ShotGrid, now called Autodesk Flow Production Tracking, is a pipeline tool for VFX, animation and games productions. OIO is project management for small studios: projects, tasks, files, freelancers and the client in one place, with the quote and the invoice on the same project. If you run a small 3D, CGI or motion studio and ShotGrid is more setup than your work needs, this is the comparison.
What ShotGrid is good at
Autodesk renamed ShotGrid to Flow Production Tracking in 2024, and it is still the reference tool for shot and asset tracking. It follows every shot and asset through the pipeline steps, schedules artists, and comes with RV for colour-accurate review, version comparison and drawn notes. It connects to Maya, 3ds Max and Unreal, and a Python toolkit lets a pipeline team wire in other software. Large VFX and animation facilities run on it for good reason.
Where it gets heavy for a small studio
- It is built to be configured. Pipeline steps, fields, permissions and the toolkit pay off when someone looks after them, and a five-person studio rarely has a person in that role.
- It is sold per named user, so each artist and producer who works in it is a paid subscription, and there is no free plan, only a trial.
- It tracks the production, not the business. Autodesk's feature list has no quotes or invoices, so what the job is worth and what the client has paid live in another tool.
What OIO does instead
OIO is project management for small studios. Each client job gets one project page with its tickets on a kanban or a timeline, the deadline, files, a whiteboard and team chat, and on paid plans recorded calls with transcripts. The budget, the hours and what has been paid sit on the same page.
A freelancer gets a link to a ticket. In a browser they read the brief and the feedback, upload the work and mark it done, with no account and no seat. The client gets a status link that shows where the project stands.
The quote and the invoice come from the same project, in any currency. Studio is $69 a month for five seats, and people who only view use no seat. The free plan covers 3 projects, no card.

When ShotGrid is the better fit
- If you need shot and asset tracking by pipeline step across hundreds of shots, ShotGrid is the better fit. OIO tracks tickets, not shots and pipeline steps.
- If you review renders with a colour-accurate player, version comparison and drawn notes on the frame, ShotGrid is the better fit. OIO keeps files and comments on the ticket but has no review player and no version stack.
- If your artists publish from Maya, 3ds Max or Unreal straight into the tracker, ShotGrid is the better fit. OIO has no plug-ins for 3D software.
- If artist scheduling and resource planning across a large team is the main job, ShotGrid is the better fit.

Questions
Is OIO a good ShotGrid alternative?
For a small studio that needs projects, tasks, files, freelancers and the client in one place, with quotes and invoices on the same project, yes. If you need shot and asset tracking by pipeline step, a review player with version comparison, or plug-ins for your 3D software, ShotGrid does that and OIO does not.
Is ShotGrid the same as Flow Production Tracking?
Yes. Autodesk renamed ShotGrid to Flow Production Tracking in 2024, as part of its Flow brand. It is the same product under a new name.
Can freelancers work in OIO without a seat?
Yes. You send them a ticket link. They read the brief and the feedback, upload the work and mark it done in a browser, with no account. If they want to keep a history of their work, they can create a free account later.
