An ftrack alternative for small studios
ftrack Studio is production tracking and media review for VFX, animation and creative teams. OIO is project management for small studios: projects, tasks, files, freelancers and the client in one place, with the quote and the invoice on the same project. If you run a small 3D, CGI or motion studio and want something you can set up the same day, this is the comparison.
What ftrack is good at
ftrack Studio, now part of Backlight, does production tracking, scheduling and media review in the browser. Reviews sync live across locations, external reviewers join without a paid seat, and ftrack Connect links it to Maya, Nuke, Houdini, Cinema 4D, Unreal and Adobe applications. It has a Python API for a studio that wants to build its own pipeline, and every plan has unlimited projects and reviews.
Where it gets heavy for a small studio
- Each person on your own team is a paid seat. Only external reviewers are free, and there is no free plan, only a 14-day trial.
- Much of its depth is in Connect and the Python API, which pay off when someone on the team builds on them.
- It tracks the production, not the business. ftrack's feature pages list no quotes or invoices, so what the job is worth and what the client has paid live in another tool.
What OIO does instead
OIO is project management for small studios. Each client job gets one project page with its tickets on a kanban or a timeline, the deadline, files, a whiteboard and team chat, and on paid plans recorded calls with transcripts. The budget, the hours and what has been paid sit on the same page.
A freelancer gets a link to a ticket. In a browser they read the brief and the feedback, upload the work and mark it done, with no account and no seat. The client gets a status link that shows where the project stands.
The quote and the invoice come from the same project, in any currency. Studio is $69 a month for five seats, and people who only view use no seat. The free plan covers 3 projects, no card.

When ftrack is the better fit
- If you review shots with your client in a live synced session, ftrack is the better fit. OIO has no media review player.
- If your artists publish from Nuke, Houdini or Maya into the tracker, ftrack is the better fit. OIO has no integrations with 3D or compositing software.
- If you plan to build your own pipeline tools on a Python API, ftrack is the better fit.
- If you need the tracker hosted on your own servers, ftrack is the better fit: its Enterprise plan offers self-hosting. OIO is cloud only.

ftrack's column was checked against ftrack.com on 12 October 2026. Outside people on ftrack means external reviewers; on OIO, freelancers and clients working from a link. Prices are left out on purpose because they change. Sources: ftrack pricing, ftrack Studio.
Questions
Is OIO a good ftrack alternative?
For a small studio that needs projects, tasks, files, freelancers and the client in one place, with quotes and invoices on the same project, yes. If you need synced media review, integrations with Nuke, Houdini or Maya, or a Python API to build on, ftrack does that and OIO does not.
Does ftrack do invoicing?
Not according to its published feature pages. ftrack Studio tracks production and reviews media, so quotes and invoices happen in a separate tool. OIO issues quotes and invoices in any currency from the same project the work is tracked on.
Can freelancers work in OIO without a seat?
Yes. You send them a ticket link. They read the brief and the feedback, upload the work and mark it done in a browser, with no account. If they want to keep a history of their work, they can create a free account later.
Try it against your own work
