Quote template for business consultants
Consulting quotes go wrong when the problem is not yet understood. The client describes a symptom, the consultant prices a solution, and three weeks in it turns out the real problem is somewhere else. A short, paid discovery phase fixes this: a few days of interviews and data review, ending in a findings memo and a properly scoped proposal for the main work.
Then choose a pricing model and be explicit about it. A day rate suits open-ended advisory work. A fixed fee suits a defined deliverable. Value pricing, where the fee relates to what the outcome is worth to the client, only works when that value can be named and agreed. Whichever you pick, say whether the deliverable is a report and recommendations, or hands-on implementation, because those are very different amounts of work.

What a business consultant's quote should spell out
- The question the engagement answers, in one or two sentences the client agrees with.
- Phases: discovery, analysis, recommendations, and implementation if included.
- Pricing model per phase: day rate, fixed fee, or a fee tied to an agreed outcome.
- Deliverables by name, and whether implementation support is in or out of scope.
- Access needed: people to interview, data, systems, and a named decision maker.
- Travel and expense policy, and the payment schedule.
Questions business consultants ask
Should business consultants charge for discovery?
Yes. Discovery is real work and often the most useful part of the engagement. Price it as a small fixed fee and credit part of it against the main project if you want to make it easier to approve.
Day rate or fixed fee for consulting?
Fixed fee when the deliverable is defined and you have done similar work before. Day rate when the scope is unclear or the client wants advice on call. Many consultants use a fixed fee for the report and a day rate for anything after it.
How do I quote value-based consulting fees?
Only once you and the client have agreed what the outcome is worth, in their numbers, not yours. If you cannot get that conversation, quote a fixed fee instead. A value price with no agreed value behind it just looks expensive.
Quote it, then invoice it, without retyping
In OIO a proposal belongs to its client and project. When it's accepted it becomes an invoice draft with the same lines, and the money view shows what is outstanding and what is paid. Free plan, no card.
