Quote template for video editors
The first question in an editing quote is how much footage there is and what state it is in. Two hours of single-camera interview is a different job from twelve hours across four cameras with separate audio. Ask for a sample and a rough count before you price, and say in the quote what the price assumes.
Then define the stages: assembly, rough cut, fine cut, picture lock, then colour and sound. Picture lock is the line that matters. Changes after it mean redoing the grade and the mix on the affected scenes, and the quote should say that those changes are billed.

What a video editor's quote should spell out
- Amount and type of footage the price assumes: hours, cameras, formats.
- Cut stages and the number of revision rounds at each.
- Picture lock, and that changes after it are billed separately.
- Finishing: colour, sound mix, captions, graphics, and which are included.
- Music: who chooses it and who pays for the licence.
- Deliverables: length, resolution, codecs, aspect ratios, and whether project files are included.
Questions video editors ask
How many revisions should a video edit include?
Two rounds before picture lock is common. Ask the client to send all notes for a round in one list from one person. Notes from three people on three different days are three rounds.
What is picture lock?
The point where the edit is final and no more cuts change. Colour and sound are done after it. Write it into the quote, because changes after picture lock mean redoing finishing work.
Should I quote for raw footage I have not seen?
Quote on stated assumptions, such as hours of footage and number of cameras, and say that more footage or poor audio is billed at the day rate. Or ask for a sample before quoting.
Quote it, then invoice it, without retyping
In OIO a proposal belongs to its client and project. When it's accepted it becomes an invoice draft with the same lines, and the money view shows what is outstanding and what is paid. Free plan, no card.
